About Sonny

A respected expert in the aviation industry, Sonny Makuwa is an aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) with decades of experience in aircraft operations management. As the founder and CEO of Makuwa Aviation Management, Sonny combines technical expertise with a passion for operational excellence, leading two high-performing aircraft maintenance operations in Nigeria and South Africa. His leadership ensures top-tier fleet management, maintenance efficiency and the highest standards of aviation safety.

Sonny’s aviation journey began in 1990 with foundational training at Denel Aviation and Bombardier Aviation Training School where he qualified as an aircraft mechanic. He then joined ExecuJet Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) in South Africa, where his passion for aircraft maintenance flourished over 20 years. Rising from hangar manager to senior aircraft maintenance engineer and eventually to MRO executive. Sonny gained unparalleled expertise, particularly in Learjet 45 and Bombardier Global 600 models. His deep technical acumen and dedication have made him one of the most sought-after maintenance engineers on the continent.

Recognising the growing need for solution-driven innovation in the aviation space, Sonny founded Makuwa Aviation Management in 2020 with a pioneering vision: to simplify the complexities of aircraft management. His approach is centred around personalised service, ensuring aircraft owners experience a stress-free, efficient management process. His leadership philosophy—captured by the motto, “We will do it”—sets him apart in a competitive global market.

Sonny combines technical brilliance with a strong sense of community. Inspired by his mother’s guidance on economic growth, he is also an aspiring cattle farmer, nurturing a small herd on his farm in Hammanskraal in honour of her legacy. This commitment to legacy is core to who Sonny is – a humble leader dedicated  to impact the next generation with  innovative thinking.

Currently pursuing her law degree, Malebogo has a strong focus on regulatory frameworks, corporate governance and contract law, all essential pillars in the ever-evolving aviation sector. Fascinated with how international legal standards ensure safety, efficiency and innovation across the skies, Malebogo is also a qualified paralegal.

Bernadette knows exactly how to optimise operations – she’s been doing it for over 20 years! Revelling in our fast-paced environment she drives efficiencies, safety management and team leadership with ease. Bringing a comprehensive understanding of aviation regulations, safety protocols and operational excellence to her role, she ensures compliance and operational excellence at all levels. Her passion for creating collaborative, high-performing teams is key to our success.

Outside of aviation, Bernadette unwinds by hiking, often exploring South Africa’s stunning landscapes solo or with friends. An avid reader and traveller, she also dedicates her time to community initiatives focussed on empowering women, children and the elderly. Her ultimate goal? To one day lead an NGO and make a lasting social impact.

Having won multiple awards, his academic journey reflects his dedication to excellence. After completing his articles with Deloitte South Africa, he expanded his global experience at Deloitte’s San Jose office in the U.S., gaining insights into private equity, venture capital and tax practices.
